Pathophysiology of COVID-19-induced myocarditis. SARS-CoV-2 uses the Spike protein to bind to and enter a variety of cells including type II alveolar cells, cardiomyocytes and endothelial cells. Myocardial inflammation results from the combination of hypoxemia, thrombus-induced ischemia and the migration of proinflammatory cytokines and cells to the area.
